Today Congresswoman Renee Ellmers released the following statement regarding the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson, Arizona:

“I was shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the senseless attack on Congresswoman Giffords and others in Arizona today.  According to early reports, there have been several confirmed deaths, including those of Judge John Roll and a nine-year-old child.  My thoughts and prayers are with the victims of this horrific act and their families, staff and friends.

I would like to commend the swift reaction of first responders today.  As a former emergency room critical care nurse, I will be praying for those doctors and nurses as they continue to care for the wounded, as well as for the law enforcement officials working to apprehend and bring to justice those involved in this horrific attack.”

All politics set aside. Ms. Giffords is a loyal patriotic American. She has been a true friend and supporter of our armed forces especially USAF Search and Rescue. She has an outstanding record of supporting our troops and families. She is one herself……her husband is a U.S. Navy Captain and NASA Astronaut. We may differ on some issues, but Ms. Giffords is the type we need in Washington. Someone who can see both sides clearly and think things through. I wish her a speedy recovery. Let’s not play the blame game on this. The fact is it was another act of a mentally ill person and not politically motivated. Instead of more gun laws…..how about reforming the mental health system so these people can get help.
