LILLINGTON, N.C. — In the wake of a mass shooting that critically injured one of her fellow lawmakers, Republican 2nd District Congresswoman Renee Ellmers said Thursday that she plans to carry a gun when making public appearances.
“We have to protect ourselves. We know that. That is something we have always been cognizant of,” Ellmers said. “There have been times in the past I have carried my weapon, and I will probably continue to do so. Some days I might have it. Some days I might not.”
She said the Jan. 8 shooting in Tucson, Ariz., in which six people were killed and Democratic Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head, steeled her resolve to be armed.
“I feel safe with it, and I think we should all be able to defend ourselves as we need to,” Ellmers said.
Democratic 11th District Congressman Heath Shuler also has said that he plans to carry a gun while in public. Republican 9th District Congresswoman Sue Myrick told The Charlotte Observer that she’s a good shot and likely would carry a gun when she felt the need to do so.

For first time in its history, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has rescinded a clean water permit for a coal mining operation, a move that is likely to provoke backlash from the industry.
The decision in effect kills the Spruce No. 1 Mine and puts a stop to the largest single mountaintop removal permit in West Virginia history. EPA officials decided the project would use destructive and unsustainable mining practices that jeopardized clean water sources for local communities.
Federal scientists determined that Spruce Mountain would have disposed of 110 million cubic yards of coal mine waste into streams; buried more than six miles of high-quality streams in one county; polluted downstream waters as a result of buried streams; and degraded area watersheds, thus killing wildlife and adversely impacting other species.
Officials with Arch Coal, the company behind the project, were “shocked and dismayed” by EPA’s ruling. “Absent court intervention, EPA’s final determination to veto the Spruce permit blocks an additional $250 million investment and 250 well-paying American jobs,” Kim Link, a company spokeswoman, told The New York Times.
Arch Coal intends to fight the permit removal in federal court.

The year 2012 looms large in the mind of Barack Obama. After two years of decline in the number of those who view his policies, his performance, and his personality favorably, Barack Obama has begun yet another process of reinvention on the road to reelection.
Will he succeed in bamboozling voters once again?
The policy shifts following the November shellacking the Democrats received from voters are clear.
Foremost among these shifts to the center is the tax deal reached with the Republicans. There will be others to come, as renewed attention is devoted to transforming the tax code itself to make it simpler and fairer. There will be more feints to the center.
Barack Obama will adapt even more, altering his image so he can again appeal to the great center of American voters: the jackpot that every candidate must win to enter the White House. Will Obama be able to connect with voters, as every politician must, on a personal level?
Conservatives should not count Obama out yet. He may be cold-blooded, but he is a chameleon who can change the way people perceive him.
Indeed, he has already begun to do so. The premiere of Obama 2.0 took place in Tucson, where his speech was warmly received and a new, more emotional Obama was on display (the voicecracking brings to mind the lip-chewing of a thoughtful Bill Clinton). And the road show has only just commenced.
A clue to Obama’s ability and willingness to adapt can be found in the words of his book Dreams from My Father. There he mentioned only one book, Malcolm X’s autobiography, and wrote that Malcolm X’s “repeated acts of self-creation spoke to me.” Therein lies the clue to Obama’s plan to rebrand his own image. A man who can fake a Southern accent, the story of how his father came to America, and the story of his parents’ being inspired by the Civil Rights march in Selma to conceive him has no problem morphing for political purposes.
We are about to watch the extreme makeover of Barack Obama in real time.

The United States House of Representatives and Senate represent many things, excluding the American people. But these two bodies are needed by the elite establishment to keep up the aura of democracy and so-called representative government.
Members of the House and Senate are manipulated puppets in the paid service of the establishment which owns and runs the U.S. government. The House of Representatives and the Senate have great value, as a matter of fact incalculable value, as symbols of liberty and representative government. But they are hollowed out and gutted symbols, a facade and a myth that serves to keep the American people hoodwinked and blinded to widespread deceptive political chicanery.
Americans mistake the symbol of representative government for the thing symbolized. Representative government has evolved into privilege, prestige and wealth. While we slept they carved themselves out an ivory tower of untouchables by prostrating and selling their souls to the money power.
The time is long gone when Americans could go to the polls and vote for representative government. The great tragedy is that they still believe that they can.
The Founding Fathers absolutely saw our day and how representative government would be usurped by the money power. The concept of prohibition of privilege (nobility) in public office was written into the U.S. Constitution, Article I, Section 9, Clause 8.
Members of Congress and the Senate have surreptitiously acquired the status of nobility and privilege because they have prostituted themselves to the system unequivocally. This proves so well that Congress and the Senate have evolved into nobility and privilege in substance and in fact without the title.
The election process in America has become a disguise for corruption that attracts the corrupt. When men and women go to Washington, they quickly learn that they are paid by the Federal government and therefore they are in the hire of the Federal government. No allegiance to their constituents is necessary and, as a matter of fact, there is very little pretension.
If Americans could restore their power over so-called elected representatives, this could cut out the smoke and mirrors of politics. I think the hour is late, and maybe even too late, but let’s try to reverse all the perks that our “elected representatives” have bestowed upon themselves, such as: Voting themselves pay raises; tenure and pensions; liberal, free healthcare benefits not available to citizens; immunity from the laws they imposed on citizens; retirement plans paid for by the government; Congressional retirement fund for themselves instead of Social Security; and no term limits.
From A Reader
The following was sent to us by several readers. It is a bill that should be offered NOW in Congress:
Congressional Reform Act
- Term Limits. Twelve years only, one of the possible options below…
- Two Six-year Senate terms.
- Six Two-year House terms.
- One Six-year Senate term and three Two-year House terms.
- No Tenure/No Pension. A Congressman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay from government when they are out of office.
- Congress members (past, present and future) participate in Social Security. All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people.
- Congress members can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do.
- Congress members will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of the consumer price index or 3 percent.
- Congress loses their current healthcare system and participates in the same healthcare system as the American people.
- Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.
- All contracts with past and present Congressmen are void effective 1/1/11. The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen. Congressmen made all these contracts for themselves.
Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, serve your term(s), then go home and back to work.
This will have to be done by the American people. Citizens need to force their elected officials to introduce the Congressional Reform Act.
On January 23 – 29, 2011, School Choice advocates will gather all across the nation to shine a spotlight on effective education options for every child.

Well written letter from www.paradiserecovered.com
Dear Fred, Margie, Shirley, and other members of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas:
My name is Andie Redwine. I have written to you on a number of occasions, respectfully asking that you reconsider your world-famous demonstrations at the funerals of fallen soldiers and public officials.
I sent another letter to you and your church on Sunday evening regarding your plan to demonstrate at the funeral of nine-year-old Christina Green. As you know, Christina was shot by Jared Lee Loughner in an act of domestic terror towards Representative Gabrielle “Gabby” Giffords in Tucson, Arizona. Many were injured, and Christina is numbered among those deceased.
Since you read the Bible and claim it as your final authority, I’m acting in accordance withMatthew 18:15-17, though I will admit that it is difficult in any vein to think of you as a brother. But the Jesus I follow also asks me to pray for my enemies (Luke 6:27) and to do good to those who oppose me.
In any event, know that I pray for you.
Since you haven’t responded, I’m taking the substance of my letters to a larger audience per the passage’s instructions. Rest assured, we will publish your response to give you equal opportunity.
It might interest our readers to know that the Westboro Baptist Church is not affiliated with any known Baptist affiliations or conventions. Some people confuse this fact…it’s probably in the name.
I read your statement about the Tucson massacre carefully. You are convinced that God is punishing the United States of America as an avenger interested in rage and bloodlust. You believe that God sent Jared Loughner to avenge your perceived inability to demonstrate or “watch” on street corners. You explain that the blood of these folks is on our hands.
You state: “That child (Christina) is better off dead, so the cup of her inquity will not overflow.”
I’d like to take a moment to point out what you have accomplished in your ministry.
