CHANGE Strikes Again
The group Communities Helping All Neighbors Gain Empowerment (CHANGE) has declared that they know what is better for kids than their parents. And some of their board members DO NOT HAVE kids and DO NOT WANT KIDS! This group is dedicated to ending the longstanding WS/FC school board policy of allowing parents to choose what school their children attend in favor of busing based on income level. They also wish to end out of school suspensions (for everything except the most extreme acts of violence) and even pool PTA money county wide. (See CHANGE and Forced busing.)
Good people can have honest disagreements about what is the best approach to student assignment plans. But CHANGE has shown no goodness in their efforts to express their message. They have resorted to race-baiting and slurs to demonize individuals who have dedicated many years to the children of our community. They have even gone so far as to compare current school board member Jeannie Metcalf to the evil, racist, Democrat George Wallace; as well as telling Mrs. Metcalf that she was “going to hell for hating black children.” This type of rhetoric is inexcusable. (See NAACP uses Racist, Hate Filled Flyer to Promote Liberal Democrats.)
While not perfect, WS/FC schools match or exceed the performance of similar sized school systems in the state, and significantly out perform Wake County schools in both composite test scores and garaduation rates (Wake County just abolished a student assignment model CHANGE would like to recreate here in Forsyth County). CHANGE even admits as much in some of their own literature. Through their efforts two years ago, CHANGE has already ensured that you will have a hard time knowing who believes what by having all school board elections declared non-partisan. We must not allow them to take away a parent’s right to choose what is best for their children.

These candidates are the only ones who support keeping parental choice as the core for any student assignment plan. The only way to make sure they get elected is to find their individual names on the ballot. Click here for a printable list of these and other candidates who support choice. Then take the print out with you and GO VOTE! Choose the candidates on the print out and you will have done your part in ensuring the rights of parents to decide what is best for their children.
